SS-31 (elamipretide) is a tetrapeptide with alternating aromatic and cationic residues that interacts with cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane. MOTS-c is a 16-residue peptide encoded by the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, one of the mitochondrial-derived peptides.
Researchers use them in studies of mitochondrial function, mitochondria-to-nucleus signalling and metabolic stress in cells and animals.
